Pest Control for Texas Cockroaches

Pest Control for Cockroaches In Boerne, TX

Have you turned on the lights and found a cockroach scurrying across your floor? Did it give you that creepy, crawly feeling? The feeling that causes a bit of panic at the sight of a cockroach.

You are not alone! Unfortunately, cockroaches are an all too common pest in Texas. The Texas heat forces cockroaches inside to look for dark, cool places (and warm in the winter) with a lot of moisture in which to hide.

Did you know that cockroaches are the most detested pest worldwide? They contaminate food, spread harmful bacteria, and cause health problems like allergy problems and asthma in children. It is no wonder the sight of a cockroach can cause us to panic.

4 Common Types of Roaches Found in Texas

  1. American Cockroach - American cockroaches are also known as palmetto bugs, water bugs, or wood roaches. The American cockroach is the largest cockroach found in Texas. They have oval-shaped, reddish-brown bodies with yellow markings on the back of their heads. American cockroaches have thin, long antennae and can fly. Adults grow to be 11/2 to 2 inches long.
  2. German Cockroach - German Cockroaches are the smallest cockroaches found in Texas and one of the most common pests worldwide.  These light brown roaches average only about 0.13 inches in body size.  They use their wings to scurry away rather than to fly. Because of their small size, these cockroaches are one of the hardest to control (formerly called extermination).
  3. Oriental Cockroach - Oriental cockroaches are also known as a black beetle. They like to live outside in gardens and inside trash cans. When the weather becomes too hot, they seek cooler temperatures inside typically hiding in crawl spaces. Because they like to stay hidden, they are often hard to spot, and homeowners may not even know they are living in their home. Oriental cockroaches have shiny, black bodies and non-functional wings.
  4. Flying Cockroach - Unlike most cockroaches, flying cockroaches can actually fly!  Although they are poor flyers, their increased mobility makes it easier to spread harmful bacteria throughout your home.  If you have flying cockroaches in your home, you’ll want to schedule pest control as quickly as possible to alleviate them.

How do I keep cockroaches out of my home?

Cockroaches enter homes looking for the best places to hide. You can help to keep them out of your home by making your home less attractive. Remember, cockroaches like to hide in dark, damp places like under bathroom and kitchen sinks, and in basements and crawl spaces.  To prevent roach invasions, seal around all plumbing entry or exit points and repair plumbing leaks as soon as they start.

Follow these 6 tips to prevent cockroaches in your home

  • Keep your home clean – regularly vacuum and wipe down surfaces to remove any excess food and spills.
  • Regularly take out the trash and secure lids – cockroaches are attracted to garbage odors.
  • Eliminate hiding places – cockroaches love to hide in cardboard boxes and old newspapers.
  • Minimize excess moisture – make sure your basement and crawl spaces have proper ventilation.
  • Repair leaky faucets – cockroaches seek out moisture. Fix leaks to eliminate water sources.
  • Seal around pipes – cockroaches can enter your home through small cracks around your pipes.

All-Natural Cockroach Repellents

If you want to try an all-natural pest control treatment, peppermint oil, cedarwood oil, and cypress oil are known to repel cockroaches. Cockroaches also detest the smell of crushed bay leaves and coffee grounds.  You can also utilize plants around your home to deter cockroaches and other pests.

  • What do cockroaches eat?

Cockroaches feed on both plants and animals. They will feast on almost anything but especially like sugary foods, grease and fat, starches, and meat products.

They will even eat glue, book bindings, and human hair.

Cockroaches are attracted to decaying plants, rotting trash, compost piles, dog droppings, and cat litter. These unwanted pests are known as the sanitation workers of the animal kingdom. The worse something smells, the more attracted the cockroaches are.

Keeping your home and yard clear of debris and utilizing pest control will help eliminate these pesky critters.

  • Lifecycle of a Cockroach

Cockroaches go through 3 stages of life: egg, nymph, and adult. Females produce one egg sac each month for ten months. Each sac contains on average 16 eggs. The female cockroach will carry an egg case for several days and will then place it in a safe, damp place.

On average cockroaches live 6 to 15 months depending on the species, moisture, and temperature.
